St. Andrew’s Development

St. Andrew’s Church has been a central part of village life in Malahide since it was built in 1822 and has been a focal point around which much of the character of Malahide is formed. It is an integral part of the United Parishes of Malahide, Portmarnock & St. Doulagh’s which serves the ever-growing Church of Ireland community in the area of Malahide, Portmarnock, Kinsealy and Balgriffin.

Architect's impression of the new development

We have now begun a new development at St. Andrew’s, the first since the church was enlarged in 1870. The new development plan aims to enhance the overall building while fully protecting the integrity of the present structure.

The central element of the project is a new Side Chapel adjoining St. Andrew’s which will be dedicated to St. Marnock, in recognition of the former Portmarnock church within the Parish.

The new St. Marnock’s Side Chapel will be:

  • designed to accommodate approximately 30 people
  • especially valuable for hosting services at which small congregations are the norm
  • furnished with removable chairs to create a space that can be easily converted to accommodate small parish gatherings

Other elements planned include:

  • New Entrance Porch (the current porch is too confined and restrictive, most notably for major church services and in inclement weather)
  • New Cloakroom within the existing reception area
  • Disabled Access to new side chapel and to the main church
  • Ancillary facilities, including toilets and refreshment dock
  • Creation of a new Vestry
  • Conversion of the existing Vestry into a Music Store Room
  • New Choir Robing Room
  • Improved external and internal lighting
  • Flower arranging area
  • Landscaping and boundary re-alignment

The new, tastefully designed building will be linked to the southern side of St. Andrew’s and will partly extend into the
existing Rectory grounds. Low profile in design, the new building will complement the existing church structure, with outer walls faced with hand-cut stone to be in visual harmony with St. Andrew’s.

How You Can Help
A fund-raising target of €100,000 has been set to help finance the plan. Parishioners, corporate bodies and the wider
community are invited to subscribe to the purchase of the various items needed to fit-out and furnish the development.

It is hoped that you will support it wholeheartedly and that through:

  • a personal contribution
  • a direct donation for a specific item (see below)
  • fundraising events that you might organise,

you will help raise the necessary finances to meet the expected completion date of Spring 2006.
